State: OH
Unit: 774 TCS
Location: Mactan
Year: Nov 1967 - Dec 1968
Comments: Got through C-130E school and got orders for Mactan. Looking forward to the PI since my dad had been there in WWII. Was the first loadmaster to arrive (Nov '66) in the 1966 rotation and got on the list for Bangkok almost as soon as I arrived. Then brought an aircraft to MacDill via Langley and about froze my butt off. Spent some time back home in Florida before bringing another B back to Mactan. Loved the PI and would go back. VietNam was a beautiful country flying over it but you can have all of VietNam. Got a Wounded Herky Award 22Feb1967 in 61-959 dropping in Tay Ninh.

Comments: I was TDY to TSN from 12/20/1967 to 02/21/1968. I will never forget the Tet experience as will everyone else that was there. I have been trying to locate the crew chief of C-130, tail # 58-0743. On February 18, 1968 I was working in the cockpit of that aircraft, around 0300, when the rocket attack occurred. I need to thank him for saving my life on that early morning. I believe he was in the 772nd. I would sure like to thank him. I have pictures that I will share.
On the same night, a C-130 (partial tail # 300) that was parked next to 0743 was damaged as well and I would like to find out who the crew chief of that A/C was as well. I need to talk to him.

Unit: 463 OMS, 316 OMS, 8 OMS
Location: Clark AB, PI, Langley AFB, VA, Ubon RTAF, Thailand
Year: (70-71), (74-75), (72-73)
Comments: I thoroughly enjoyed my tour at Clark and sharing many young memories of trips to places like Manila, Olongapo, and Bagiuo. Especially the canoe trip up to Pagasahan Falls. Me and my bud Billy Yates hit the bars hard. Going TDY into Cam Rahn Bay was the greatest...and the outdoor movies were a special treat(Atta boy, Luther!!!) The chicken coop barracks sucked but I had a big piece of plastic I put over mine to keep the sand out. The cookouts on the beach were incredible...and so was the pot! Sure miss barhopping with MSgt Delarosa and TSgt Mario Colley. If anyone knows their address please email me at rmccarty2@verizon.net. Del would let me sleep in his air conditioned room at Cam Rahn as he was the 1st Sgt then. My first duty station out of tech school was Dover AFB, Delaware. I worked phase docks on those old C-133 Globemasters. Joe Gunning was my mentor(of sorts) and we spent many hours drinking and driving around in that little Sunbeam Alpine of his.
Rhein Main, Germany was the least liked of my TDY's. Only thing good about it was the kick-ass beer in the bars downtown. I did like it when we would layover in the Azores on our ride to and from Germany.

Comments: some of my records have been lost. I am looking for some guys who may remember me from Mactan Ist, PI where i was assigned in Maintenance Control, often on the flight line checking on parts or a/c to cannonball from just to keep our fleet in the air while in, and this was in rvn. remember being sprayed off with agent orange just to cool off. our maint shack was just off the flight line. I recall the base attack in april '65 at night. i went once tchio rio as a part of a detail to change tires during a supply mission (on C130s) and there was nothing there except a small building and a bunker a few guards and about 5 of us to inspect tires and brakes as needed.
i have ptsd and a lot of effects of agent orange including ischemic heart disease, a heart attack and several strokes but because my 214 doesn't show any evidence of my time in the rvn. i have been constantly declined and keep re submitting and have bow Submitted for a board review. I have been at this since november of '98. Unit: 463 OMS, 6200 OMS (PACAF), 773rd TCS
Location: Langley VA, Clark PI, Tan Son Nut VN
Year: 1963-1967
Comments: Greetings: Joined June 63 from Miami FL; Did a 90-120 day TDY to Panama supporting SA Embassies and Army Jungle Training Paratroopers in early 64, did a 30 day TDY supporting the crews of the Thunderbird's (wild for a 18 Yr old and yes, once I left off the cap to the gear reduction unit - very embarrassing but the crew was very accommodating to me - there was a "bit" of white smoke that looked like the plane blew up). Went to Clark TDY in Aug 65 and transferred to permanent in Nov 65 - assigned to the 773rd in Sep 66 and stayed until a June 67 discharge. My memories first go to the first C-130 Crew that went down in Pleiku on Jan 7-66; the Tan Son Nut Flight Ops was named Callahan in Memory of the AC; All Crew can be found on the VNM Wall Panel 04E with my good friends "Pete" Lowell White Loadmaster who exuded a can do attitude, and SSGT Lute, Flight Eng who instructed me well. Our 20 day to Saigon (12 on 12 off) with 10 day back to Clark was non-stop. On the 10 back, never knew when and where you were going to go as long as your aircraft was in perfect shape - Japan, Thailand, back to US to ferry C-130B's with cracked wing struts (Benefit = Layover in Hawaii). FYI - A few Tail #'s I seem to recall 729, 724, 934, 936. Many fond memories of the Crews I supported and their trust in me - being moved in flight crew trailer at Clark along with some not so - the Da Nang bomb dump blowing, (A pair of doubles) taking off with two engines on one side dead while receiving bullet holes in airframe and replacing two blown tires on one side on dirt (cannot where in Nam either occurred) both successful. After 43 Years most "buds" like Bill Gardner (NC), John Johnson (PA/CA), Rick Rickett (OH/PA) and others have been lost for contact & time. Please contact me for any conversation and assistance... FYI - I have no pictures - all were taken by my Angeles City, Pampanga girl friend... Best to our teams and remembrance to our fallen. Pete

Comments: Dyess was my first assignment out of Nav School. I remember the instructors looking down and shaking their heads when they called "Dyess" for me. I asked why did they do that and I was asked "Have you ever been to Abilene?" It was a good assignment - I was gone 6-8 months out of the year, Judy's restaurant in Buffalo Gap served a great breakfast, and I saw the world. Left in 1988 to Norton AFB (C-141), finished up in 1992 after Gulf War 1.
