Name: John Kasza
HomeAddTown: Lewiston
State: ID
Unit: 463 FMS
Location: Clark Air Base - Philippines
Year: 1968-1969
Comments: Arrived at CAB fresh out of tech school in the spring of 1968. I was one of perhaps 15 new airmen assigned to the 6200 A&E; most of us were re-assigned to the 463rd a couple months later when the Mactan C130B squadrons were moved to Clark. Tsgt Stevens arrived with the Mactan planes and became our shop chief. He was a former SAC man and to say he had high standards would be an understatement. We all learned a lot from that man and it showed in the condition of the birds. The 463rd was by far the best unit I was part of during my short four year air force career. And to go along with that, it was located in the Philippines. Of course, there were periodic 55-day TDY "vacations" to Tan Son Nhut...

I went TDY from Mactan about March 1968 to Vietnam for two months and came back and the 463rd had moved to Clark Air Base. Clark wasn't as nice as Mactan but I still enjoyed the time in the Philippines. It's been almost forty years and my wife and I are finally going to visit my wife's relatives this Aug.

Unit: 3rd Aerial Port - 773rd TAS
Location: Pope - Clark
Year: 69-71
Comments: Loadmaster E's and B's. Arrived at Clark AB, PI 2 Jan 70, my birthday. It was freezing at Travis when I left and I wore my blues. It was 90 something at Clark when I arrived. Hauled trash all over RVN and flew several commando vault missions both 10,000 and 15,000. My A/C let me fly and I made 3 takeoffs and two landings in a B model from the right seat. Managed about 20 hours unofficial stick time. Thank you Capt Fishbach.

Hairiest sorties - took a big red fire Air Force fire truck (AKA mortar magnet) to Khe Sanh in 71 and rode on a GCA to below minimums at Hue in overcast with those radio towers close in on both sides of the field. Got fired on somewhere between An Khe and Pleiku but they missed. TSN brought out 5 pallets of 105 shells listed on the manifest at 5000 lbs each. Enroute to a 3500 ft strip, I did the math and discovered they really weighed 7500 lbs each. Advised the boss and we all decided to continue on. He touched down on the first 50 ft, applied max reverse and full brakes. We stopped rolling 10 ft from the fence on the over run and had to back up to the turn off taxiway. He spoke sharply with "mother" on the way back.

Got out in 72 and was a police officer in Abilene, TX for 28 years. Now I'm retired and don't do nuthin, and I don't start that til noon.

Comments: Out of my 26 1/2 years Mactan was the best assignment. I left big black boot heel marks as they dragged me off the ramp to a C-130 Herk and took us to Clark. That was not that bad either. I was in Maint...spent tons of time at TSN across the field in the heavy maint area. At Clark I was in QC.
late 1969 I went to FE school and then back to CCK Taiwan for three years until we transfered to Kadena. I quit flying after the war and went back to maint. Retired as CMSgt July 1985. Still married to my wife I found in Taiwan have two great grown kids and two beautiful grand daughters. We now call Smyrna Georgia home and am only a few miles from the C-130 factory and get to see them flying often. I still stop and watch them fly over. (Posted July 2009)

Comments: The 772nd was my first assignment and remains one of the best I ever had. The Red Foxes were known for "leaning forward in the straps" and getting the job done and I was fortunate to serve with some of the best including John Roohms, Mike Leinen, Ed Perry, Wayne "Notso" Clever, Les Squires, and a host of other heroes. It's important to start out a career with good people, and the 772nd was filled with some of the best! Cheers!

I read Jim Taylors note asking if anyone remembered the c-130 that took a direct rocket hit at danang. I flew in the next day and shot my own pics that I still have to this day. Lucky no one was hurt or killed. Fond memories of my 4 years in the Air Force and especially those years working and flying in a great airplane . Hope to hear back from any of my "OLD' prop buddies.
