Neil Jay was the Aerial Delivery Officer at Det. 10.  MSGThompson ("baby snakes") was a memorable character also at Det. 10.

Name            = Thomas D. Hawkins
HomeAddTown     = Columbia
State           = SC
Unit            = 463rd Consolidated Maint, 772nd TCS
Location        = Ardmore Okla, Ashiya AB Japan, Sewart, Tenn
Year            = Nov 1955 through Feb 1961
Comments        = I was assigned to the prop shop at Ardmore in Nov 1955. I had just completed 2 1/2 months of turbo-prop training in Caldwell, NJ at the Curtiss-Wright plant. Can't remember just when the first two 130's arrived. Must have been in late 1956. The 1st two sat on the ramp for several months, red lined. They had Curtiss Electric props. Curtiss lost the contract and Aeroproducts put their propeller on the A-Models. The C-130's first mobility, the way I remember it, was in Nov. 1957 to North Aux. field, SC. It was cold, stormy & rainy. One night many of the tents were blown down and others were flooded. So many of the flt engineers came down with the flu that more engineers were flown in from Ardmore to fly our missions. We were not up to par on the aircraft and spent a lot of time working on the new bird.

In 1958, I was assigned to the 772nd TCS, along with SSgt Bennett, Ssgt Quattlebaum, Sgt Carmichael and Cook. (5 Prop Men). The 772nd took the first C-130's over seas to Ashiya Japan to fly the missions of the wing (464th I think) stationed there while they transitioned into the C-130's they were scheduled to start receiving. We took eight aircraft over to Japan. The last three tail numbers were: 028, 031, 032, 033, 036, 038, 043, 045. Most of the A/C had only 200 to 300 hours on them.

I flew over on 031. On one of the missions, 031 was over Cambodia with a D-8 Cat on board. There was a malfunction and the plane went into a 110 degree dive. It took everyone in the cockpit to bring it out of the dive. The right wheel door was ripped off and it took several feet of the right horz. stabilizer off as it flew back. They were lucky to get the plane back to Bangkok. I think the load master received a citation for his good work in tying the cat down. While at Ashiya made a record time engine change and made an altitude record. I had to leave my crew several weeks early to return to the states on an emergency leave.

Upon my return to Ardmore I went back to the consolidated maint prop shop. About this time the wing was in the process of moving to Sewart. I was at Sewart until Feb of 1961 when I put in for retraining and went to Keesler, Miss to train into light ground radio. I went to Lowry CO as a 3 level Television repairman. I spent a tour in Pakistan, and King Salmon, Alaska. Between these two assignments I had a tour in Vietnam,(1969-1970. While I was there I got to ride in the C-130's again. I flew test hops while I was at Ardmore and Sewart to check the props in flight. It seemed like old home week to get to fly in the C-130 again.

If any of you were ever stationed with me, drop me a line or give me a call. (I hope I have most of these dates pretty much right)

P.S. I retired in June of 1973 while stationed at the Pentagon. I then spent 25 years carrying mail for the Post Office in Columbia, SC. I retired from the PO in Feb. 1998.

Comments        = I was assigned to the 348th TAS at Dyess at the time when the 463rd was deactivated at Clark, and reactivated at Dyess in 1972, our Sqdn was redesignated as the 773rd.  The 463rd had a great record during the period I was with them, and we traveled all over Europe, the middle East, South America, Africa, Alaska, Southeast Asia. The 773rd was selected as 22AF Squadron of the year, in 1976 I believe, due to the great support we got from the maintainers in the 463rd, prior to our missions and during our TDYs. I was the NCOIC of Flight Engineers during that period.

Comments        = Thoroughly enjoyed all experiences with the unit.  Once while doing a post flight inspection of my aircraft at Tan Son Nhut AB, I spotted holes in the left wing (inboard).  Upon removal of panels, I found some bullets (homemade) in the dry bay.  Notified headquarters that we had sustained battle damage.  Some young Lt (Maintenance type) came out and I showed him the bullets. He immediately demanded that I give them to him.  Found out later that he gave them to some HQ Colonel for a war souvenir.  Several months later he was promoted to 1st Lt.  To some degree it still torques me to this day. Clark was more developed.  I had a house down town and a girl friend. There were certainly a LOT of good time in Angeles!

Comments        = I'm probably the only supply guy in this group of ops/maintainers.

Clark was first of many overseas assignments. Just as quickly as we started getting our 5-levels, orders started pouring in.

To hasten the process and leave Little Rock AFB, a buddy and I went monthly to CBPO to apply for world-wide assignments.  Somewhere in there I woke up and realized that world-wide meant Vietnam.  I was lucky to get Clark, though, but lucky enough to spend only 2 rotations of 2 months each to Cam Rahn Bay where the 314th from CCK linked with Clark's 463d to form the 834AD.  My buddy, I understand, never left Little Rock.

From Clark I went to southern Japan, Itazuke to be exact and later Hakata AS, joint service security installation.  In fact, again, there was a large batch of us, we didn't realize it then but we were destined to put the lock on the front gate as operations subsided.  I tell you this because after the gate was locked, I returned to Clark after a two year absence, even got my old job back...by this time the 463d was gone and I then supported F-4s of the 405th TFW.

Hello to all!

I was lucky because some in the states had a mod which required removing cannon plugs at the bulkhead and splicing wiring harness together. Fortunately 0428 had not been modified which made it easier to fix. On Mactan, I worked nights. Spent a lot of time at the beach. Great pictures.

All of us together worked for Chief of Maintenance Col. Vernon Baden and DCM Lt. Col. Ned Duffield (both a couple of Herk drivers). Down in the Ops Room were (all that I can recall) a Maj. Spears and Capt. Jeff Ripple. Lived off base for a while pretty much across the street from the Maharajah Motel (nice pool!) and survived the night life of Angeles City. For tour highlights, our memorable squadron secretary, Tessie Dominguez, and three of her friends talked a number of us into learning native Filipino folk dances, with the idea of appearing on a talent show on a Manila TV station. After a few too many San Migoo's I guess we agreed, because after a few weeks of practice we ended up performing the Tinikling and the Pandango Sa Ilaw on national TV (1971). Rotated out of Clark to Langley, then rotated out of Langley ASAP in order to complete my Masters and get on with my civil engineering practice. Go 463rd Cobras! (Updated 29 July 2005)

Comments        = Was a SSgt assigned to the FMS Comm/Nav shop while in Va. On the mobility team but never got to Panama on rotation while there. On flying status during post inspection check flights. TDY to Clark during the transfer of the Marines from Okinawa to Vietnam in 65. This TDY was classified and the Navy (MATS) aircrew would not tell us where we were going until we took off from Guam. You Guys remember the unfinished Chicken Coops (barracks) next to the base swiming pool they were building up for us to live when we arrived Clark? Returned to Langley after spending six months TDY at Clark to close out the squadron for transfer to Mactan.
Part of the maintenance team on duty at Hickham while our birds stopped there while being transfered to the PI. Helped to build the Comm/Nav/Autopilot shop at Mactan from the ground up using the mockup fly away kits while others went TDY to Tan Son Nhut. That was a big move to get rid of those tents. I see where Jim Tully has signed in already. He was also there during this build up. Like he said, this was the only building in maintenace with air conditoning. However it was one of those AGE aircraft portable units, but it worked great. Everybody knows how hot it gets in the PI. So we often had plenty visitors. After getting the shop set up I was able to go TDY to Tan Son Nhut on a 4 month rotation. We had to rent a house down town Siagon to live and eat. What a trip! I was there when the base was first attacked in April of 1966. The attack was near the POL storage tanks, near the Parking ramp and the Navy RVFTVN broadcast C121 Eagle aircraft that got damaged rather badly. Our maintenance was no more than 75 feet from where these aircraft were parked. I didn't get hurt thank you very much! Returned to Mactan and left for Andrews AFB during Oct.1966. Lapu-Lapu and Cebu city was a great place to be. Saigon wasn't that bad either during that period of time.
Spent four years in Thailand starting in 1972. Actually helped to close down the bases at Udorn and Korat in 1976. I'm lookimg to hear from Jacob Arellano, John Potter, Harry Hunsinger, Tully, Clark Houston, Tyler, Ben Nolte, Larry Furman and the rest of the guys during 1965 and 1966.

Name            = Clarence Dick
Comments        = Hello, My name is Clarence Dick. I entered the Air Force in early 1952. Took my training at Sheppard and then was sent to Memphis Municipal Airport, TN. The Wing had been a reserve wing and had been activated for the Korean War. It was the 516TCW that had C-46's. In 1953 it became the 463 TCW and we traded in the C-46s on new C-119s. The base moved to Ardmore AFB, Oklahoma. Most everything was hauled by the 119's except large vehicles. Ardmore was an old WW2 Base and about all that was left from that era was the supply building, two old round top hangars and the old Hospital and a few other small buildings scattered around the base. A new base was built. Along toward the end of my enlistment (1956) the 119s were replaced by the C-130. The 463rd was the first outfit to receive the C-130. I went on to make the Air Force my career, later being shipped to Japan serving on Honshu, then Kyshu Island at Itazuke. While there the 463rd hauled munitions to Ashya since the Chinese reds were dueling for Formosa (1959) and we got ready for war. I have always been interested in the 463 TCW and have followed its move from place to place. It was a good outfit and I would have loved to serve with it during the Vietnam War. Incidentally our Group Commander of the 516th was Col Funston, son of General Funston. Just wanted to let you know there are still a few of us old farts left.
P.S. I have revisited Ardmore in recent years, took some pictures. Ironically and sadly about all is left is the old supply building and one round top hangar.

The base at Ardmore later closed and the Wing went to Sewart. I was separated in October 1957 and immediately joined the Air Force Reserve at Chicago-O'Hare where I served until 1977 when I transferred to Mitchell Field in Milwaukee where I retired from flying in 1980 and became the Base Civil Engineer. I had about 6,000 hours as a Navigator in C-119Gs and C-130As. I had many friends in the 463rd at Sewart and recruited some of them into the Air Force Reserve at O'Hare. When I retired I was Wing Director of Operations for the 440th Airlift Wing and had made full Colonel. We had a very severe propeller problem with the A model and lost a plane and crew at Selfridge, almost another at Willow Grove. My Form 5 shows C-130 time in 1957 and at the end, in August 1980, a 23 year run.

Comments        = I was privileged to be assigned to the 463rd Troop Carrier Wing based at Langley AFB Va. The entire wing was relocated to South East Asia in support of the Vietnam War. The wing was divided between Mactan Island in Cebu City and Clark Air Base. I was assigned to Clark AB and did TDY to Tan Son Nhut Air Base Vietnam. I specialized in the Environmental Systems within the FMS. The C-130 was the greatest aircraft to maintain and I took great pride and honor in being part of such a great unit. The C-130 was an extremely important aircraft during the Vietnam Conflict and it still remains as one of the most dependable and versatile aircraft today. It was one of the greatest experiences of my life being a C130 mechanic and met a lot of great people. Being part of the 463rd again would be a great honor and privilege.

I worked many hours in Base Supply receiving new C-130 parts and shipping excess C-119 parts. Since the 463rd TCW was the first unit to receive the new C-130, we were very busy indeed. There was a rush to "get the bugs out" of this new cargo plane. I also served 4 years at Maxwell AFB, 18 months with the 464th TCW at Pope AFB and 3 years at Elmendorf AFB, AK before being appointed a Warrant Officer in the US Army. I served 9 years with the U S Army, retiring in the fall of 1976. My Army assignments included 2 tours at Ft. Bragg, 1 tour at Hunter AAF, GA and 2 tours to Vietnam.

Dan Flanagan (room buddy-upper bunk, shared Honda S90). Joe Rodine, Roy Matney, Mark Hamilton, Tim Rinehardt. Here is more with last names or whatever these remaining brain cells can recollect (probably be some misspelling). Buzzard, Jacubowitz, Franke, Lefort, Schuppe, Bartram , Last. Some NCOs at time were Hodges, Fears, McMasters, Nichols, Roysdon (I remember #965 and it's demise), Littleton (cmsgt. Captain Ed Breen (pilot), "admin" captain Platazburg (I know that's wrong spelling). Who was chief of maintenance-Col.?? What was "Pappy" (msgt) name? Remember "h.a." Rose (tsgt)? Last I saw Andy Anderson was Travis 1971. I'm sure I'd recall many more with a memory jog. Please let me know if you know status of any of these mentioned (including those that may be deceased). I mostly hung out downtown on first street "Stop Inn", "JJs" etc. Did go to "Chinas Inn", "Buckertoo" and a few other bars (often too wasted to remember). Thanks.

After about a month of my arrival, I was asked if I'd be interested in being the base courier. I was told it meant escorting special (that could include "SECRET") documents to and from Mactan and Clark. Interpreted, it meant picking up and returning the movie reels every two weeks for the outdoor theater. I did that for the rest of my stint at Mactan. I loved it. Comments = While I was at Forbes for 9 years I was only in 463rd a short while.  Was a B model Crew Chief and went on rotation to Panama.  Quickly learned the FE had it made.  As crew chief I flew almost as much as the FE, didn't get flight pay and had to work on the airplane after we landed while the FE went off to happy land.. I quickly applied for FE position after returning to Forbes from Panama. As punishment for these spurious thoughts I was assigned to A models at Rhein Maine, Germany (as FE) and sat out most of Nam(not all) in a special recon squadron flying in Europe and Middle East. Someone had to do it!!!!

Norman's office (WG Cmdr).  Was transferred to 463rd CAMS and worked part time Orderly Room (for First Sgt (MSgt James Lyttle) and in Unit Supply down on flight line by AGE shop and C-130 hangar.  Was essentially last person in 463rd CAMS to leave Ardmore. Was left as a two striper, in charge of a group of four more troops - with job of finding all hidden items of value and getting them either shipped off to Sewart on opportune acft, or turning them in to base supply.  Put a lock on last open barracks at Ardmore and went out the gate in 1957 Ford Fairlane at about seventy mph (no gate guards then).  First Sgt at Sewart had to take my word as to when I left Ardmore - there was no place to sign out of when I left.  Did 30 years active time and retired from USAF Jul 1987.  Carried mail for a short time, then was Investigator/Special Agent for DOD/DIS/DSS/OPM until retiring March 2006.

Comments = I was assigned to Base Supply at Langley and I met a guy a guy from the 463ed who had orders to go to Mactan.  He didnët want to leave Langley because his wife was expecting and so I volunteered to take his place. Headquarters took care of switching orders.  I joined the 463ed and off I went to Mactan from Langley.  I flew over pond on one of the squadrons C-130ís.  It was a long and memorable trip.  Four days later I arrived in Mactan AB.  We were met by the Commander and given a cold San Magoo as we jumped off the aircraft. I have fond memories of Lapulapu City and Mactan.  I knew that one day Mactan would be an island paradise.  When we arrived we lived in screen in tents and ate out of  mess kits.  The work was enjoyable, the salty dogs refreshing, and the Magoo in the Breezeway was always cold.  Iím so glad I stumbled across this web page.  I am planning on attending the 2007 reunion.
